ADHD In Men
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects individuals across all ages, but its presentation in men can often differ from that in women. Men are frequently diagnosed with ADHD at a younger age, and they may exhibit more overt symptoms such as impulsivity and hyperactivity. Men with ADHD might face challenges in professional and personal relationships due to difficulties with organisation, time management, and emotional regulation.
ADHD Symptoms in Adult Men
✓ Persistent difficulty sustaining attention - Losing focus during conversations, meetings, reading, or tasks — especially if they’re repetitive or unstimulating.
✓ Mental restlessness - A constant sense of internal “pressure” or feeling mentally on the go, even when physically still.
✓ Impulsivity in speech or decisions - Interrupting, speaking without thinking, oversharing, or making quick decisions that later feel poorly judged.
✓ Chronic procrastination and difficulty starting tasks - Struggling to begin tasks unless there is urgency, pressure, or high interest.
✓ Poor working memory - Forgetting what was just said, misplacing items, losing track of steps in a task, or needing repeated reminders.
✓ Hyperfocus on interests - Periods of intense, immersive focus on hobbies, work projects, or topics — often at the expense of other responsibilities.
7. Emotional intensity and quick frustration - Strong emotional reactions, irritability, or difficulty regulating feelings, especially under stress.
✓ Disorganisation in daily life - Difficulty keeping on top of admin, planning, time management, or maintaining consistent routines.
✓ Restlessness or need for movement - Fidgeting, pacing, tapping, or feeling uncomfortable sitting still for long periods.
✓ Inconsistent performance - Capable of high achievement but struggling with consistency — “all or nothing” productivity patterns are common.
A Note To Those
Who Are Still Wondering
If you have read this far and you are sitting with a question about yourself, or about someone you love, we want to say this directly:
Your experience is real. The difficulty you have felt is real. The exhaustion of performing neurotypicality in a world that was not designed for you is real. And the question you are carrying, however long you have been carrying it, deserves a proper answer.
You do not have to have certainty before you start. You do not have to have a clear idea of what you are looking for. You just have to be willing to find out.
