ADHD In Girls

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is often perceived as a condition predominantly affecting boys; however, research indicates that it can significantly impact girls as well. Girls with ADHD may exhibit symptoms differently, often presenting as inattentiveness rather than hyperactivity, which can lead to underdiagnosis. They may struggle with organisation, task completion, and maintaining focus, often masking their challenges to fit in socially. This can result in heightened anxiety and low self-esteem.

ADHD Symptoms in Girls

Persistent difficulty sustaining attention – Drifting off during lessons, daydreaming, or “zoning out,” especially in long or unengaging tasks.

Quiet distractibility – Attention pulled by internal thoughts, background noise, or other children — often without obvious outward signs.

Internalised impulsivity – Blurting out answers less often than boys, but making quick decisions, rushing work, or interrupting softly or subtly.

Restlessness that looks subtle – Fidgeting with hair, clothes, pencils, or jewellery; shifting in the chair; appearing tense rather than overtly hyperactive.

Difficulty starting tasks – Struggling to begin homework or chores unless the task feels interesting, supported, or broken into steps.

Poor working memory – Forgetting instructions, losing track of what they were doing, misplacing items, or needing repeated reminders.

Emotional sensitivity and quick overwhelm – Strong feelings, big reactions to small setbacks, or becoming tearful or frustrated when demands feel too much.

Disorganisation in daily routines – Difficulty keeping track of belongings, remembering deadlines, or managing school routines without prompts.

Inconsistent performance – Bright and capable, but work quality varies; may excel in creative or high‑interest areas while struggling with routine tasks.

Hyperfocus on preferred activities – Deep focus on reading, drawing, friendships, or special interests — making transitions away from them challenging.

We Use the Latest
Evidence‑Based Clinical Tools

At NeuroVerify, we use gold‑standard, internationally recognised assessment tools to ensure every screening is accurate, reliable, and aligned with current clinical practice. These tools are widely used by psychologists, clinicians, and specialist services across the UK and internationally. They help us build a clear picture of strengths, needs, and everyday functioning — so you can feel confident in the results.

  • The BASC‑3 is one of the most comprehensive behavioural screening tools available. It gathers insights from parents, teachers, and young people to understand.
  • Conners 4 is the leading evidence‑based tool for identifying attention‑related differences.

A Note To Those
Who Are Still Wondering

If you have read this far and you are sitting with a question about yourself, or about someone you love, we want to say this directly:

Your experience is real. The difficulty you have felt is real. The exhaustion of performing neurotypicality in a world that was not designed for you is real. And the question you are carrying, however long you have been carrying it, deserves a proper answer.

You do not have to have certainty before you start. You do not have to have a clear idea of what you are looking for. You just have to be willing to find out.

NeuroVerify is here when you are ready.
